Keith Francis Sharp

Lawrence County News September 21, 1967

 

Keith Francis Sharp, 20 in the Marine Corp since August 29, 1966 was killed in action in Quang Nam Vietnam on September 4 according to a Marine Corp report. PFC Sharp was shot in the chest by hostile forces.

Born in Gary Indiana on March 12, 1947 to Jewell C and Ruby Sharp he spent most of his life in Lawrenceville. He was married to Donna Blevins on August 21, 1966; he is survived by his wife and a son Keith Francis Sharp II.

PFC Sharp is also Survived by his mother Ruby Francis Sharp from Sumner and four sisters; Mrs. Maxine Beverley of Portage Indiana; Mrs. Guwana Barnett jr of Crown Point Indiana; Judy Sharp of Portage Indiana; Belinda Sharp of Sumner.

Four brothers also survive. Jackie C Sharp of Temple Arizona; Larry L Sharp of New McFord Connecticut; Lendon E Sharp of Crown Point Indiana; Richard R Sharp of Lowell Arkansas.

Keith Attended Lawrenceville Township High school and was active in sports there. He spent his rest and recreation period with his wife Donna, in Hawaii just last month. They celebrated their first anniversary there.

At the time of his death, Keith had been in Vietnam six months.

The body will be returned to the Nichols Funeral home in Lawrenceville. No date has been set for Services.

Rites Friday for War Casualty

Funeral Services will be held at 7:00pm Friday from the Nichols Funeral Home for Pvt. Keith Sharp, 20 the second Lawrenceville Serviceman to be killed in the Vietnam War.

            Rev. John Lefler will officiate.

            Pvt. Sharp’s body, escorted by Sgt. Phillips, will arrive at 3:04 pm today at the Dress Memorial Airport in Evansville. The Casket will not be opened.

            He was killed in action September 4 1967 in Quang Nam, Vietnam.

            Intermit will be Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Chapel Lawn Cemetery at Schereville Indiana, near Gary with military honors.

            Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 am today.

 

 

 

Barry A Cullison

Lawrenceville residents learned Sunday that their first Vietnam fatality occurred when PFC Barry Cullison, 19, was killed in action on Friday.

Barry was the Son, of Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. Cullison, of Fort Wayne Ind., and a “native” of Lawrenceville, stationed with the US Marine Corps in the DaNang  of Vietnam. He and a small group of Marines had been occupying the small village of  Mylok 2 (Marine designation) and had been under constant attack, day and night, by the Viet Cong.

            Details of Pfc. Cullison’s death, nor action in which he was participating at the time of fatality, were not given in the message received by his parents Sunday morning.

                        Born in Chicago December 14 1947 the son of Charles W  and Joyce Andrews Cullison, Barry spent the greater portion of his lifetime in Lawrenceville and Vin­cennes where his father practiced medicine. He considered Lawrenceville his hometown. He graduated from Lawrenceville Town­ship High School with the c1ass of 1965 and attended Vincennes University for one year before en­listing in the U.S. Marines in July 1966.

Barry reported for duty with the Marine Corps August 1, 1966 and had been in Vietnam since January 28, 1967.

            The body will be returned to Lawrenceville within, seven, to 12 days and funeral arrangements will be announced at that time. Intermittent will be In Lawrenceville Cemetery.

Surviving besides the parents are one brother, Brooks 12, at home; paternal grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Charles B. Cullison, of Lawrenceville and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ola B Andrews Greenville Illinois.

Hugh F Newell

M/Sgt Hugh Newell killed in Korea

 

M/Sgt Hugh Newell, son of Mrs. Edna Newell, 1111 Tenth Street, Lawrenceville, was killed in action in Korea on December 7,according to information released by the War Department.

             Newell was a flying sergeant with the Marine Air Force, piloting a Corsair Fighter plane.

  His wife, Nancy J. Newell, and son and daughter, David and Natalie, reside at 309 Gillespie street, Bridgeport.

            Sgt. Newell was a veteran of World War II, serving as an officer and pilot.  He reenlisted in the Marine Corps and had already distinguished himself.

            He was recently awarded the Gold Star in lieu of Second Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Gold Star, in lieu of the Fifth Air Medal. His service was with the fighter squadron, Marine carrier based, operating in the Sea of Japan. He had more than 50 combat missions to his credit, flying over North Korea.

            In letters to his mother he had reported that his work in the Korean war was more intense than it had been in World War II.          I

            Hugh was the son of Orville Newell, deceased, and Edna Moore Newell. He was born in Lawrenceville where he grew to manhood. He is one of ten children. A brother, Bob F Newell, is serving in the Marines, and is stationed in California.

Notes:

Technical Sergeant Newell was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with Marine Fighter Squadron 323, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the aircraft carrier USS BADOENG (CVE-116). On December 7, 1950, while making a strafing run on enemy positions near Hagaru-ri, Korea, his aircraft was hit by small arms fire and crashed into a hillside. For his leadership and valor, Technical Sergeant Newell "Whiskey" was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Gold Stars, the Air Medal with 4 Gold Stars, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

Paul Dunlap

Paul Dunlap Killed at Shepard Field Texas

Pvt Paul Dunlap, son of Mr. And Mrs. Alvin Dunlap of South 5th Street died at Shepherd Field Texas of Gunshot wounds, and the body was returned to Lawrenceville for burial,

            Funeral services were held at the Free Methodist Church in Lawrenceville Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.

            Full details in connection with his death have not been released by the war Department.

            Surviving are his parents, one sister Mrs. Merle Calvert of Noble, and one brother, Louis Dunlap of Noble.
